I did to. Another book I think they should have added was John Locke's Two Treatises of Government. I mean that book was written in response to the Leviathan and pretty much invented America along with Wealth of Nations.

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

You missed "Touching the Void" the ultimate story of two men against the absolute worst nature can throw at them. I would have to say the best book; if this is actually a list in which we "must" read to better ourselves as man, is "How to make friends and Inluence people" by Dale Carnegie.
Nonetheless, a decent list.

The only book I would like to add is the Bachman Books.

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Paradise Lost-John Milton
The Peloponnesian War-Thucydides
I like both Steinbeck and Kerouac, but they're over represented. Lots of good choices, but Milton and Thucydides are essential.

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Great list; and while I can think of stuff to add to it, like everyone else, those titles would just be the usual classics every other "must read" list includes. I hadn't even heard of a lot of these titles, or completely forgotten about others

That said, there's also a lot other good stuff listed by commenters, too (of course, you have to shovel through a lot of SJW and leftie crap to find them).

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

This looks like a great list, but not being an aficionado of reading, I feel that a lot of them are a bit too advanced for me at this stage.
Any suggestions for books I can start with on this list?

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

A new book just came out called, "Dear Son" by Dave Bruskas. It contains a series of letters to the son he knew only briefly. I found it to be very powerful.

Here is an excerpt: http://marshill.com/2014/05...

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Great List. Two of my favorites not mentioned:
Magister Ludi (The Glass Bead Game) by Hermann Hesse
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner
And then for pure enjoyment and encompassing all genres:
The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Great list, I've read about half of the list. I absolutely love your reasons behind why to include the Bible in the list. Great way to integrate it.

After reading the hatchet by Paulson I also read the majority of his work. Many have a similar theme of a young youth from troubling circumstances that find themselves in a position where they must rely on themselves to survive and overcome a seemingly colossal stacked deck. Well worth the reads I really enjoyed voyage of the frog, and it may be my favorite of his work.

One book that I would add to must read books is Illusions by Richard Bach. It really awakened me, and inspired me to change my view on my life. It's a story about a pilot who reluctantly becomes a Messiah after meeting another pilot. As he's struggling to come to terms with the new direction of his life, he begins to embrace and understand why the other pilot says that everything in his life is there or that way because consciously or subconsciously, that's what he wants.

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Another great replacement for one off the Roosevelt works... Someone is a Teddy Roosevelt Fan, although its easy to see why. I'd like to recommend some missing books in place of the few books each man disregards by inherent nature.

"The Peloponnesian war" by Thucydides

"Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand

"No Easy Day" Mark Owen

"Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad

"World War Z" by Max Brooks

Thanks, this is a great subject!

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Interesting list; I've read most of them. I'd add:

'A Vagabond Journey Around the World' by Harry A. Franck. A young man circumnavigates the globe without passport, money, or baggage. In 1904 it was possible.

'Blue Highways' by William Least Heat Moon.

What boy doesn't want to be a pilot? Eddie Rickenbacker's 'Fighting the Flying Circus' and Lindbergh's 'We' are favorites of mine, but if you prefer jets there's Robin Olds' 'Fighter Pilot'.

Clear thinking is rare nowadays. A useful introduction is 'Fallacy: The Counterfeit of Argument' by Fearnside and Holther.

Patrick O'Brian's 'Master and Commander', and the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin series, deserve a mention. Amazing fiction on many levels.

And yes, everybody ought to read 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged', if only to see what all the fuss is about. Ninety-nine percent of attacks on Rand's ideas are ad hominems, straw men, or outright lies.

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

Gates Of Fire by Stephen Pressfield.

Re: 100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man’s Library

I totally agree that it should be less Roosevelt on this list.
