I owned the multipurpose knife shown above. I figured out that if I opened the blade, the fingernail file, and the toothpick, I could grip the handle in my fist and have a weapon that could wound three different ways. I could stab forward with the blade, stab downward with the fingernail file, and jab frontward with the toothpick while also punching my adversary. Fortunately, I never had to opportunity to try this out in an actual fight, but if you had enough time and forethought to pull out all three tools and grip them in your hand, then you would give yourself a little more of an advantage.

I've carried one since I was 5 and I don't care if it is "illegal" or not as long as it doesn't offend God. Jesus said sell your cloke and buy a sword so I'm sure it doesn't offend God.
I fear anyone who worries about the legality of a simple pocket knife is not and never will be a manly type of man. This is the main problem now days, the government and schools have emasculated the men. We have had it too easy for too long. I have always been around very masculine men from the time I was born and didn't know there was any other type but it seems our country is full of "men" who are about as manly as a wet noodle or there wouldn't be a need for a site like this (written by a woman).

I just got myself a Gerber EAB lite, it's cheap, practical, and get's the job done. I was thinking of getting a safe queen, but what's the point?

Pocket knives are indeed manly. Kershaws are excellent, as others have noted.

But you are wrong in suggesting that knives are an indifferent weapon. At close quarters they are very difficult to defend against.

Found a pocket knife two feet under the ground near the Brandywine river with my metal detectors. Approx five inches....very corroded! Inscription " Washington" anyone know anything about this?

I started carrying a pocket knife around about a year or two ago and now I feel naked without it. Besides my wallet, I carry three things, my knife, my keys, and a lighter (and I am not a smoker). You never know when you are going to need to light something on fire. Few people have lighters so mine comes in frequent use.

After reading this article my wife and I happened to be back home at the parents homestead. So I asked my father if he had an old pocket knife. Turns out he had a Colonial Ranger 3-blade pocket knife that his father passed down! I am now the proud owner of a 3rd generation knife that is still in great condition. I am excited to pass this heirloom down to my son. Thanks for this article!

I tend to switch up my EDC every few months or so. I have quite a few knives that i love to carry and have to give them all their fair turn in my pocket!

I totally agree on that guys should bring their own knife. I personally prefer KERSHAW model. Sometimes, because of this, I was not allowed to enter the bar or some places.

I still carry the knife my dad gave me when I was a boy however, I find that I use my Leatherman Juice more often at the moment. My next blade is likely to be a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian once I can swing the cash.

like twelve bucks for XC90 high carbon steel, full flat grind, thin tang, super lightweight, and can be easily modified to flick open in one hand but with a locking mechanism that keeps it closed in your pocket.

i'd also suggest a tiny piece of cork in the handle slit to prevent the knife from touching the wood while its locked closed.

the only maintenance necessary is that the blade is high carbon with extremely little chromium, so if you live in a humid environment, you might want to oil it every now and then. Also, if you expose it to acid (cutting fruit, etc), it will patina very quickly. This isn't a bad thing, just a thing to know about it.

I'm a mormon. When I was going to college in Logan UT, one of my roommates saw my swiss army knife at church. He asked my why i needed a knife and church, implying it was inapproriate to have one there. I just said I always carry a knife, everywhere. a month or two later, we went to a talk, given by on of the apostles of our church. He said that a real man needed to carry a knife with him everywhere. He asked everyone who had one to pull out their knife, hold it up in the air, and stand up. As I did this, I looked over at my roommate and smiled. That week he bought a swiss army knife and started carrying it everywhere!

There is a surprising amount of technology that has gone into knives over the past 50 years, mostly in the realm of material science. As such, I'm a proponent of carrying a high quality newer knife for the steel improvement alone, if nothing else.

Well,
I had some knife experience in childhood, but nothing in adult life. Somehow got into knife sharpening, bought some watersones, did kitchen knifes job. Then decided that I need something to have, not the Supermarket type knife. I went and bought Rat 1, well... know its always with me in my small back.

i recommend spyderco, benchmade, victorinox, and if you want to feel like badass- carry a case knife.

I carry a pocket knife everywhere I go with the exception of my school and places where it is inappropriate to do so (although I don't limit myself too much in regards to the latter notion). It has been that way for years and will most likely continue in that fashion until my very last hour in this plane of existence.
